He and I share the same birthday.
He was the only horse to win the Triple Crown (by four lengths!) undefeated!
Being a person immersed in sports most of my life, I was a bit disappointed to hear Mr. Coburn's comments, but I don't hold them against him. I'll just remind him that Chrome tied for fourth, he wasn't second to the fresh horse.
withLove.

Lynnehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00990373651788404672noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-818215323812390398.post-70085737946435397532014-06-08T15:14:07.026-05:002014-06-08T15:14:07.026-05:00Im in France so I didn't see the race. I am a huge fan of thoroughbred racing and agree wholeheartedly with you and the owner that it just isn't fair to have a completely rested horse come into the last leg of the triple crown. Only the great ones, who can beat all comers, should attain that status. Secretariat set records (which still stand) in each Triple Crown race; Seattle Slew overcame a badly troubled trip in the Derby and muddy Belmont to become the only undefeated TC champion.
Since that time we have lost stamina in the breed by not running valuable horses past their three year old year, and promoting certain unsound stallions who sire precocious ( and lucrative) juveniles and sophomores. The breed is only now slowly beginning to recover its stamina. There is no secret to the fact that Triple Crown winners are attached to decades in which strong sires of great stamina dominate the breed.
Your answer to the TC quest is to award the Crown only to horses who can beat other tired horses, taking us backward once again.
Prior to Tonalist, the last five thwarted Triple Crown runs were beaten by longshots of 30-1 odds or more. This may signify odds skewed by amateur bettors, and it also indicates the TC contenders simply couldn't stand the pressure of three grueling races. Those horses do not deserve to be a chef de race.
Steve Coburn's outburst, calling Tonalist's connections "cowards" for entering their horse in an open race, is the worst display of poor sportsmanship and low-class behavior that I have ever seen in a lifetime of racing.
Coburn knew the conditions of the race when he entered, and boldly claimed his horse would win it. Much to the sorrow of the racing public, Chrome didn't win--so Coburn blamed his loss on the exact conditions of the race which he knew going in. In fact, Chrome may have grabbed a quarter coming out of the gate, and that lost him the Crown.
Coburn's outburst was common and vindictive; Tonalist's owner quite correctly replied that Coburn's accusations did not merit the dignity of a reply.
There will be another Triple Crown winner, deserving of greatness--but lowering standards of behavior and cheapening the conditions of the race won't get us there.Sallynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-818215323812390398.post-40217244364826301782014-06-08T07:22:07.680-05:002014-06-08T07:22:07.680-05:00Congrats Marsha! These three races need to be tied together somehow, or at least keep the last race for those horses actually vying for the Triple Crown, ie: they have to have ran all three races to be considered.
