Within one weekend the weather in Houston has changed from the dreadful heat of
summer to a more temperate time (for most it would still be considered hot at 85)...
and with this change we have rains, big downpours which we didn't have at all last year.
The lack of rain caused the most serious drought Texas has seen in my lifetime, and what used
to be the lushness of Memorial Park close to downtown Houston is now a tragedy.
Some say close to 80% of the trees perished.
Here's something to think about: Memorial Park comprises nearly 1,500 acres inside of the 610 Loop, almost double the size of Central Park in New York City. It ranks 25th in terms of the most visits per year of any city park nationwide.
Home to a golf course, tennis courts, running paths and numerous other facilities, the park is perhaps best known for its heavy forestation.
As CultureMap recently reported, early approximations of the tree losses may have been grossly understated. Sixty six million dead trees in the greater Houston area may have been an underestimation. (this a direct quote from one of our publications).
So it is with happiness we see so many young Houstonians hard at work donating time and
energy to help with reforestation. I think they will even work out a program to sell some
of the logs from the felled trees to other Houstonians as remembrances, and there will
be an additional pathway which will be laid with stones bearing the names of all the
contributors. This is nice.
And, so we are having the beginning of our Fall weather, which is
glorious, everyone is outside again riding bikes, cooking on the grills,
having friends over.
For me, Fall is always the time to rethink my wardrobe, which has become
very simple. I used to have a complete excess of apparel. Well, of course, I did.
I worked at Sak's 5th Avenue!
The same reason chefs are overweight is the reason I had too many clothes.
Now, the accessories are the key to my wardrobe being up-to-date.
I still buy only good quality clothing, but much much less.
Black needs to stay black, and the only way to assure this is to pay for it
one time, or to buy it over & over & over.
Escada pieces, Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Etro & The Row
are the elements I mostly choose.
Why?
Because they hold up, don't wrinkle, and look like $1 million all the time,
even years later.
Example, I saw a woman at the vet's office a couple of days ago...she was wearing
an Escada pin-striped pant suit. Perfection. And, I know that pant suit was
at least 10 years old.
Anyway, shoes, handbags, shawls, scarves and JEWELRY,
these are my main purchases each season.
loving these new necklaces, coming today to the shop
& we have added scarves, shawls & cardigans
comes in all colors including black
Layering on the long chain necklaces, adding long pearls & so forth.
This look works for all us tall gals.
We cheer for Denver now that Payton is there (after Indianapolis let him go!).
& TOM BRADY, OF COURSE !!!
Happy Weekend Everyone
Seriously sad news about the memorial park Marsha. All those oxygen generators gone in a season, thankfully the hearts of Houston are there to begin the repair.
ReplyDeleteI am loving the fact that even in the vets office nobody is safe from the beautiful style watching eyes of Marsha the magnificent. XX
Oh, Paul, I seriously couldn't help but notice how wonderful this lady was attired.
DeleteToo too pretty, you know?
I'm so sorry about the drought there…our yard took a huge hit during a drought about 2 years ago and it's still struggling. Your pieces you have in right now are stunning! And you are spot on about sticking with a few classic pieces for your wardrobe! I've always admired my mother in law for doing that as opposed to me who buys on impulse and has way too many clothes that never get worn. I'm trying to do much better now! Hope you are having a nice weekend with the change in the weather! It's been that way here as well and it's been wonderful!
ReplyDeleteCarolyn, when I worked the temptation was too strong to resist (& we got great discounts too), but now my life is different. I enjoy what I have as opposed to owning everything and not having time to wear it all. Thank you for commenting on our poor park situation too.
DeleteMarsha !!!
ReplyDeleteHow nice to see you today! I know you have had such bad weather out there; so sorry....we up here in Minnesota had one week in June that it hit over 100, but since then, it has been unusually cooler. I LOVE YOUR ACCESSORIES! I must have some pieces of clothing that I have had for SO LONG but still look great. But changing accessories is always a great way to make that old outfit SHINE!
I am still head over heels about your aqua drop earrings, but unable to buy things these days...ONE DAY, ONE DAY! But I have that fabulous black collier I won from you and it is marvelous.
Enjoy a splendid Sunday! Anita
It is a tragedy seeing so many old trees going, very sad! We're suffering here as well from the drought, now the second year, and no proper rain in sight. I'm praying.
ReplyDeleteWishing you a lovely and relaxed weekend, dear Marsha,

Very sad news about Memorial Park. Why do rains have to come too late. And your new collection of necklaces is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteMarsha, I didn't realize you worked at Saks. I was part of the management team that opened the original store across from Tony's in the seventies. Good memories. I miss the fabulous lunches at Rudy's next door when we had the time to get away.
Enjoy your weekend and the nice temperatures.
Sam
Oh Marsha, that second picture of the park made me GASP! That is the saddest thing I have seen in awhile. I am so happy that the yound people are giving their time and talents to help. I love the jewelry and sweater/shawl you showed I need a NEW pair of GOOD black pants but that is probably all the clothing I will buy. I have PURGED alot of my clothes for the move but still have TOO MUCH. Have a beautiful Sunday. I am going to be dumping my outdoor flower pots and cleaning them out for the move........ XO, Pinky
ReplyDeleteMarsha--I'm so thrilled to discover your beautiful blog! Very inspiring! Yes, it's so sad about the drought. I am thinking very wet, rain-filled thoughts for your part of the world. I'm sure things will turn around and in the meantime, merci beaucoup to you for all your joie de vivre! Jamie (Bonjour, Happiness!)
ReplyDeleteI hope the park regains its former splendour with all the work of the volunteers, we are in a drought right now, praying for rain so our gardens stay alive. I have some old designer pieces that I love, but I'm putting on weight and they dont fit, rats :(
ReplyDeleteSome stunning new things! Love that you are adding shawls and cardigans! What ashame though about the drought, hate to see beautiful old trees go like that. Heres hoping for a nice drenching rain from mother nature!
ReplyDeleteShawls and cardigans!!!
