ASMARA

"The May 2013 issue of Vogue has gone all out to showcase the fashions of the Roaring Twenties featured in the new movie of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel "The Great Gatsby". To show the ethereal beauty of Miuccia Prada's costumes to the best advantage, Vogue set designer Mary Howard chose a soft blue Oushak rug and beige silk drapes to bring out the splendor of Carey Mulligan's Prada and Chanel costumes. The Vogue Great Gatsby issue is well timed to take advantage of buzz created by the May 10 release of the Baz Luhrmann directed 3D movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Joel Edgerton with Jay-Z providing the soundtrack. If you haven't yet caught the "The Great Gatsby" fever, you will soon have plenty of opportunity to do so.
Even though the movie's set designer Catherine Martin used Art Deco style rugs for the movie sets, Vogue took a different approach for their photo shoot sets by creating a contemporary backdrop with blue Oushak rugs. This makes the costumes more alluring to today's customers.

Luhrmann’s wife, costume designer Catherine Martin won an Oscar for her work on Moulin Rouge! For the Greaty Gatsby she asked Miuccia Prada to design more than 40 dresses, including Carey Mulligan’s shimmering chandelier frock made of crystal drops connected by a net of metal rings, inspired by a look from Prada’s spring 2010 collection. So far Prada has published sketches for 4 of the 40 dresses.

Catherine Martin describes the feeling she and Prada tried to evoke in the costumes of "The Great Gatesby":
"The fashions of the time saw the development of a dichotomy between those who aspired to the privileged, Ivy League look of wealthy Long Island and those who were aspiring to European glamour, sophistication and decadence. Our collaborations with Prada reflect the collision of these two aesthetics."
Vogue's photo shoot is more clearly aimed at promoting the dresses of Prada and Chanel so they chose to give them a background that would be more contemporary for which the look of watery blue oushak rugs was more appropriate."

that blue Oushak rug has me wistful, isn't it just simply beautiful?

  3. Has there ever been more expectation put on a movie than this one? Or maybe I am just honing in on it because I adore social history, art deco, and the writing style of Fitzgerald. I do hope the slight bitterness of the book is still apparent in the film. But like you, I shall be there on opening night with my ears pinned back.

I'm a long time respected admirer of Catherine Martin's design work...she brings an edgy glamour to all that she does. But these rugs are lovely too...delicate instead of dramatic...x

  4. OH!!
I LOVE THE RUGS!!! (I AM PRAYING I LOVE SOMETHING ELSE!)

The rest of it,,,,,,,It makes me so sad!!

I was an English lit major......and this is my favorite novel of all time! I wrote my thesis about Fitzgerald and Hemingway. (I concluded that Fitzgerald was the better writer!!! And I believe "The Great Gatsby the best novel of the twentieth century!

I am terrified to see this movie.......I will see it. I cannot imagine "modernizing it" will work at all!
I will be there the minute it opens..........with hope in my heart!

Please know how much I value your comments. I read every single one and do hope you will take the time to leave your thoughts. I think InstaGram with the Emojis have taken a lot away from blogging, but I love IG too.
