September 11, 2001

Today I believe all Americans need to remember how tragic
it was on that day.

We live in the Central time zone, so that morning it was earlier for us.
I was awake, but still in bed.

My daughter called screaming, "The United States is under attack."

My husband & I watched, shattered & shaken, as Aaron Brown on CNN showed us what had happened.

We knew life as we knew it was over.

We didn't leave the house until Thursday evening when we finally went to pick up a friend
to have dinner with us.

2 1/2 days watching TV non-stop

We went to NYC in December that year.
He climbed on the fences to see what they tried to block out.
The images, even months old, shook us to our core.
The devastation was HUGE.
Nothing you saw on TV could compare to the actual size of the site.
We had been to the top of the World Trade Center in previous years, and we knew
the landmarks well.  But, we never expected this incredible vastness of devastation.

And, then you thought of those 1000's of people who died, both there and on the planes.
Those 1000's or 10,000's or 100,000's of people who were directly touched by this.

Every time I see the films I feel exactly the same as I did that morning.
And, I cry.

Do you think the terrorists picked 9.1.1. because it's our national emergency call number?
Do you think they picked the date because it was a Tuesday, right after the end of summer?
Do you think they chose the date because a new President had just been inaugurated  &
 his name was Bush?
Do you think they knew both buildings would fall down?

I'm reading the book written by the Navy Seal who was on the Osama bin Ladin mission,
he doesn't disclose anything about their tactics or training that most of us don't already know.
He does disclose the inability of DC to make decisions, and their ability to leak information
about the Seals which should never have been disclosed.

I applaud all our brave service men & women and their families,
especially in light of the fact
that not much has changed with all the wars.

Think of this if you don't mind...if Jimmy Carter had not allowed the
Shah of Iran to fall the entire region would be different.
The Iranians, under the Shah, loved the West...the Shah espoused
our views and kept the region safe. There would be no terrorists.
There would be no Ahmedinejad and no nuclear threat.

God Bless America & all of us.

  1. Beautiful & thoughtful post about 9-11 Marsha. The information about Iran & Carter certainly gives pause for thought. Iran is very scary situation today. I'm with you that if the Shah was still in power, things would be different.

  2. Sam, I lived in Iran for a couple of years during the time of the Shah; I educated myself on the country's history from Persian rugs to the politics. The US had military bases there for training the Iranian military and because the Shah knew the cause of democracy was the course to take, even though he was King. There was a definite middle-class at that time, all of whom were educated in the West. I appreciate your thoughts on this as, to me, it is a very important lesson on cause and effect, you know?

  3. What a thoughtful and thought provoking post. I gues we could "what if" ourselves forever. This day will always be strange for me because of the attacks but also my daughter was married on 9-11-10! From the worst day ever to one of the happiest days of my life..............

  4. This is a beautiful post Marsha. On that day I thought I had lost my husband forever but by the grace of God he was late for his appointment so wasn't at the top of the tower. He was just walking in the door when the first plane hit and didn't know what was going on. So it's a bittersweet day for me we lost twenty close friends but I still have the man I love and for that I will always be thankful.

  5. Marsha, I remember exactly what I was doing that day, when a friend called and said US was under attack.
I visited the World Trade Center two years before the attacks and couldn't believe what the TV was showing.
I read somewhere that when you're blessed, the haters come out. When you wear God's blessings well, don't be surprised if it draws jealousy out on people.
God bless all the good people in the world, and there are so many screaming for God to help them.
What happened to americans in 9/11 shook the world, today no one feels as safe as before the attacks, so i want you to feel hugged by brazilians, we prayed a lot for your beautiful country safety.

  6. Hi Marsha!

None of us will ever forget. You know far more than I do about the political situation. I understood the Sha could not have continued even with our support.

what I do know is that it changed the world as we had known it.

I personally don't believe any of those "after-stories" about the date.....etc.

I am grateful for every day.....and every moment with my children and grandchildren and dogs and cats (we have a new one!)

And life is to be treasured every day! All day! (this comes naturally to dogs!!)

I love your blog and your jewelry!

thank you for making all of our lives beautiful!!!

    From my heart...

    Penelope

ps what lovely comments from the Brazilians.......this is so sincere!

  7. Dear Marsha, my husband and I were climbing the stairs in the department store Selfridges and as our heads came up enough to see over the balustrade we saw it relayed on all of the television screens in a circle around us in the Audio-visual Department. Over 20 screens...everywhere we turned. And my husband exclaimed, "Look at the Twin-Towers!" and my first thought was that it was a film, I replied, "Someone's making a movie." Then within a few moments the whole store emptied practically, literally everyone except a few staff were left, it was so eerie. The world changed that day, truly.
I hope you all felt that that world of people outside America reached out their arms to you, because We All Did!x

    Hugs to you Marsha,
    x Jane

  8. Marsha, I have debated for two days about commenting. I heartily agree with your sentiments thanking US soldiers, sailors, airmen/women and marines, but: 1-the beginning of the issues in Iran go far back to the overthrow of the democratically elected Mossadaigh regime in the 1950s, which the US was involved in. Additionally, the people of Iran, as opposed to the Mullahs or Ayatollah Khomeini, had legitimate grievances on the lack of civil rights and government torture and other misconduct. I personally consider it a tragedy what the religious dictatorship has done to the people and country of Iran, your statement that if Jimmy Carter had supported the Shah there would be no problems is simply not accurate. If I am misunderstanding you I apologize. We as a nation need to look at all our history to understand some of the causes of the current international situation. I believe that nothing excuses terrorism or the killing or targeting of innocents, and while I agree that the Iranian regime is involved in a significant amount of that behavior, simplifying history to believe that the Shah was all good does not help our understanding today. thanks

Please know how much I value your comments. I read every single one and do hope you will take the time to leave your thoughts. I think InstaGram with the Emojis have taken a lot away from blogging, but I love IG too.
